River’s Edge is a new learning, teaching and research building located on the edge of the North Esk River within the historic Launceston Railway Workshops at the Inveresk Precinct. The building brings together contemporary learning environments and academic workspaces, creating a setting for exchange between students and staff.
Positioned at the end of Traverser Lane and addressing the new University Square, River’s Edge establishes a clear edge condition for the campus. Generous glazing and strong architectural markers support visibility, arrival and orientation, reinforcing the building’s role as a key threshold within the precinct.
Semaphore was engaged to develop the wayfinding and signage system for the building, aligning with the broader UTAS Inveresk campus strategy. The project required a legible navigation framework that could operate across multiple levels, learning typologies and shared spaces while responding to the building’s distinctive form.
The wayfinding strategy is structured around the central atrium as a primary orientation device, with clear sightlines to vertical circulation, teaching spaces and support facilities. The signage responds to the building’s industrial context, referencing the surrounding roofscape, brickwork and structural expression.
