Djerring Flemington Hub is located on Wurundjeri Country in Melbourne, Australia. In Woi wurrung language, Djerring (pronounced: jerr-ring) means ‘together’. The new facility functions as the heart of a diverse community – it is a connector and meeting place that caters to the needs of people across generations and geological, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Djerring Flemington Hub facilitates classes, programmes, community events and provides creative, consultation and study spaces.

Users of different backgrounds, ages, abilities and visit motivations were a key consideration for the wayfinding system. Their engagement with the facility ranges from sporting events to consultations with community programs or events. Creating a space that felt safe, welcoming, and easy to navigate was crucial to facilitating a thriving, connected community.

Championing the honest and sustainable architectural design, the signage references the rich interior colour palette and crafted details for an honest and robust system that is well integrated into the fabric of the building.

Signage adapts to its location by scaling up or down to suit architectural qualities such as the brickwork grid. Honest, visible fixings and a text-based system create a unified wayfinding language.

Using the Wurundjeri Woi wurrung language and English translations to describe the function of each space embeds subtle learning opportunities and contributes to a culturally safe and welcoming experience.
